How to Choose a Remodeler in Tooele County

Upterra Builders · June 30, 2026

Handing someone the keys to your house for a few months is a big deal. We have been on the other side of that trust for over 20 years and more than 157 projects here in Tooele County, so we know what separates a remodeler you will be glad you hired from one you will regret. Here is how to pick right.

Start With Licensed and Insured. No Exceptions.

In Utah, a general contractor doing this kind of work should hold a state license. Ask for the license number and check it. Then ask for proof of general liability insurance and workers compensation. This protects you if someone gets hurt on your property or if something gets damaged. A contractor who dodges these questions is telling you something. Believe them.

Look for Real Local Work

Photos on a website are fine, but ask to see projects in Tooele County specifically. A remodeler who has finished basements in Overlake, remodeled kitchens in Stansbury Park, or added on to homes in Grantsville knows the housing stock out here. They know how these homes are built, what the soil does, and how our cold winters affect a job. Ask for a couple of local references you can actually call.

Questions to Ask Every Remodeler

Bring this list to every bid. The answers tell you more than the price does.

Watch How They Communicate

Pay attention to how a remodeler treats you before you have signed anything. Do they show up when they say they will? Do they return your calls? Do they explain things in plain language instead of talking down to you? That behavior during the bid is the best preview you will get of what the whole project feels like. If it is hard to get a call back now, it will be worse once they have your deposit.

Get a Real Written Estimate

A good estimate lists what is included, what the allowances are for things like flooring and fixtures, and a realistic timeline. Be careful with a number that is way lower than everyone else. That usually means something got left out, cheaper materials are baked in, or the low price is a hook that turns into change orders later. We would rather give you an honest number that holds than a lowball that balloons.

Local vs. Out-of-Area: Why It Matters Here

Plenty of crews will drive out from the Salt Lake Valley to take a Tooele job. Some are fine. But there are real reasons to hire local:

Trust Your Gut

After the licenses check out and the references pan out, it comes down to whether you trust the person. You are going to see a lot of this contractor. Pick someone who listens, answers straight, and treats your home like it matters. That is the standard we hold ourselves to.

If you want to see how we stack up against that list, call us. We will come out, listen to what you are trying to do, and give you a real written estimate with nothing hidden. If financing helps, we work with a lending partner who can walk you through the options.
