How Long Does a Remodel Take in Utah? Real Timelines

The most common question we get after the price question is, "How long is this going to take?" Fair question. You are inviting a crew into your home and you want your life back. We would rather give you real numbers than a rosy answer that falls apart in week two. So here is how long each kind of project actually takes in Tooele County, and what pushes the schedule around. These are honest ranges for a well-run job, not the best case we could ever pull off once.
Before the Crew Shows Up: Design and Permits
Here is the part nobody counts, and it is why homeowners feel like their project "took longer" than the build. Before demolition starts, there is design, material selection, and the permit. Depending on the office, the county for unincorporated areas and Stansbury Park, or the city for Grantsville and Erda, plan review can take a couple of weeks or more. A clean, complete submission moves fast. A vague one gets kicked back and adds time. We front-load this so the clock on the actual construction is honest.
Basement Finishing: 6 to 10 Weeks
A standard basement finish in the valley runs roughly six to ten weeks of active construction once the permit is in hand. Framing, then electrical and plumbing rough-in, then the rough inspection, then insulation and drywall, then paint, flooring, trim, and fixtures, then the final inspection. What stretches it: cutting a new egress window into the foundation, adding a full bathroom where there is no existing rough-in, or a basement apartment with a second kitchen. A big finished basement with multiple bedrooms and a bath is at the longer end. A simple open family room is at the shorter end.
Bathroom Remodel: 3 to 5 Weeks
A bathroom is small but dense. Every trade touches it, plumbing, electrical, tile, ventilation, in a tight space, so the work has to happen in sequence and cannot be rushed. Three to five weeks is realistic for a full remodel. Tile and custom shower work take time to do right, and tile has cure and set steps you cannot speed up. If we open a wall and find old plumbing or water damage, which happens in older Tooele and Grantsville homes, that adds a few days. A powder room refresh is faster. A full primary bath with a custom tiled shower is the longer end.
Kitchen Remodel: 6 to 12 Weeks
Kitchens are the big one, and the timeline is driven as much by materials as by labor. Cabinets are the long pole. Custom or semi-custom cabinets often have a lead time of several weeks to a couple of months from when you order them, and that clock runs before install day. Countertops get templated only after cabinets are set, then fabricated and installed. So a kitchen is six to twelve weeks depending heavily on your selections and how early you lock them in. The single best thing you can do to keep a kitchen on schedule is choose your cabinets and counters early so they are ordered and in transit while other work happens.
Home Additions: 3 to 6 Months
An addition is essentially building a small house attached to your existing one, so it is the longest project by far. You are into foundation and footings, framing, roofing, tying into existing systems, and full interior finish, plus more involved permitting and inspections at every structural stage. Three to six months is the honest range, and weather matters here more than on interior work. Pouring footings and framing in the dead of a Tooele winter is slower and sometimes has to wait. We plan additions around the season when we can.
What Actually Causes Delays
In our experience the schedule slips for a handful of predictable reasons, and most are avoidable:
- Change orders mid-project. Every "while you are at it" adds time. Decide as much as you can up front.
- Slow material selections. A kitchen cannot start until cabinets are ordered. Indecision on finishes is the number one homeowner-side delay.
- Long-lead materials. Cabinets, custom windows, and special-order tile have lead times outside anyone's control.
- Hidden conditions. Old wiring, plumbing, or water damage found once walls open, common in older homes.
- Permit back-and-forth from an incomplete submission, which is why we submit thorough plans the first time.
